Honda Powersports Battery AGM/Lead Battery Acid Tips

4 STEPS TO MAKE YOUR POWERSPORTS BATTERY LAST LONGER

  1. Keep it fully charged.
    2. This protects your powersports battery from freezing and from internal corrosion damage from being left low-on-charge for too long.

  2. Avoid short trips.
    3. The vehicle’s alternator may need 20 minutes of run time to keep the battery charged. After many short trips, you should check its charge.

  3. Store the battery when not in use.
    4. Disconnect the battery to prevent it from discharging in storage. Store at room temperature, above 60 F and below 80 F. Check the charge of conventional batteries monthly and AGM batteries once every three months.

  4. If it’s a conventional battery, refill the battery with distilled water.
    5.  Do not fill it beyond a mark designating the fill limit or upper level. Do not attempt to refill an AGM battery.

HOW TO CHARGE A POWERSPORTS BATTERY: 3 STEPS 

  1. Unplug the charger from power when connecting or disconnecting it to the battery. 

    2.
  2. Set a suitable charging rate. Nothing more than 3 amps. See the battery manual for charging times.
    PRO TIP: 
    3. For the correct charging rate, a good rule of thumb is to divide the battery’s amp hour rating by 10. A 16 Ah battery should be charged at 1.6 amps, for example.
  3. When the charge is complete, check the battery’s state of charge 30 minutes afterward.
  • WARNING: Use only a powersports battery charger, not an automotive battery charger. Powersports batteries are small. That means they can be damaged more easily during charging than auto batteries. A powersports battery charger should not exceed 3 amps when charging.

BATTERY SAFETY TIPS

Exercise caution when handling, charging, activating or installing a battery. 

  1. Always wear protective gloves and eyewear when working with batteries.

    2.
  2. Avoid sparks when charging batteries.

  3. Charge batteries in a well-ventilated area.

    4.
  4. Disconnect a battery from charging if it gets hot to the touch.

    5.
  5. Do not tip or overturn a battery unless its label indicates it is fully sealed and nonspillable.
